I get it. You’d rather cheer and shout for joy. Until then, bear this Seed and plant it in your neighbor’s ear–restoration in the forgiveness of sins by Christ Jesus, our Lord.

A sermon on Psalm 126 / Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Trinity / 11 November 2018
Bible Class Notes 11.11.18 (24th Sunday after Trinity)
Part I–An Introduction to Ascent
Psalm 126 (ESV) is A Song of Ascents.
1.) “Song of Ascents” –label given in the Hebrew OT to Psalms 120-134 aka ‘Gradual’ psalms
2.) “Ascents” means “Going Up, Ascending” –people sang going up the mountain road to Jerusalem to worship, sung by priests liturgically while going up 15 steps into the temple (there are 15 Psalms called “Song of Ascents”)
3.) These 15 Psalms are characterized by brevity, repetition, and HOPE
4.) Note the repeated words or phrases in this Psalm 126:
1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us;
we are glad.
4 Restore our fortunes, O Lord,
like streams in the Negeb!
5 Those who sow in tears
shall reap with shouts of joy!
6 He who goes out weeping,
bearing the seed for sowing,
shall come home with shouts of joy,
bringing his sheaves with him.
Part II–REPEATED phrases:
5.) “Restore our fortunes” –2x, lit. ‘Captivity‘ –people and things the enemy took captive
6.) “Shouts of joy” –3x, emphatic — we experienced joy before from the Lord and shall know it again
7.) “The LORD has done great things” –2x, for THEM / for US –repeated immediately in succession
8.) “Sow in tears” / weeping, w. seed for sowing –2x, captivity brings tears of loss, grief
9.) “reaping” / come home bringing sheaves –2x, reversal–what fell and was covered is raised and multiplied
Part III–RELATED passages:
10.) “Restore our fortunes” –see Deuteronomy 30:1-3 (4-10), the deserved curse reversed!
11.) “The Seed” –see Gen. 3:15, Gen. 17:7-8, Gal. 3:16, What is “the seed”? (Or who?!)
12.) “Bringing His Sheaves” –Only 5x in OT: 4x “sheaves” in Gen. 37:5-8, 1 x here. What are “his sheaves”? (or who?!) See also Psalm 126:1–what ‘dream‘ is in view?
