In these days, event the best and the brightest stand a bit shaken and uncertain. Those supposed to possess wisdom are found wanting for now. Preachers and priests too discover they possess no quick fix for our faintheartedness or easy answer to our anxieties. Small wonder you may feel foolish and out of sorts, even with regard to your spiritual life. The things that seemed certain to us, reliable, familiar and comfortably routine are no longer so. The store shelves are not stocked with enough wisdom. Welcome to a world made foolish by a minuscule microbe.
Neighbors, spouses, friends, family all could use your help, Christian. God has chosen you for this life, this moment, these times–to be His “royal priest.” And the world desperately needs your living sacrifice and spiritual intercessions, your holy work of consolation and declaring the praises of Him who “called YOU out of darkness into His marvelous light.” Feeling unprepared or inadequate to the task? Feel foolish even trying to go about it? Good! You’re exactly the sort that “God chose!” (1 Cor. 1:18-31) to name “priest” for these days. That Wisdom you need, you are given to share… it’s found outside of you, eager now to enter in and fill you with sacred purpose, in Christ!
Our Lent series “Offer Yourself, O Priest!” continues to examine facets of the Priesthood of All Believers (1 Peter 2:9-10; Rev. 5:9-10) in their relationship to Christ, our “great High Priest” (Hebrews 4:14-16). We consider the Biblical distinction of Wisdom and Foolishness.
