Sermon/Study Notes and Outline

Sermon Passage: Philippians 2:1-11(ESV)

1 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Introduction: Standing Firm and Striving

A. God initiates / calls into Fellowship

B. The Word is preached so you may have it

C. Fellowship in the Light that deals openly/honestly w sin’s darkness

D. Called Together to Stand Apart–from lawlessness, darkness, Belial, unbelief, idolatry

E. Called to One-minded Agreement in Fellowship

F. End of Philippians Chapter One–Paul’s Suffering / Chains

Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel, and not frightened in anything by your opponents. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction, but of your salvation, and that from God. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ you should not only believe in him but also suffer for his sake, engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had and now hear that I still have.” (Philippians 1:27-30)

G. Jesus to Peter, “You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men!” Peter’s confession, but rejecting the Cross…Matthew 16

PART ONE: Personal Relations/Experience of God Directed To Neighbor/Oneness of Mind

A. IF there is… (series of personal feeling and experience of God)

  1. Any Encouragement in Christ

  2. Any Comfort from love

  3. Any participation (koinwnia) in the Spirit

  4. Any affection and sympathy

B. Complete my joy: (joy, but incomplete without complete agreement). God Saves the whole you, Spirit impacts the whole you: heart, soul, strength, mind

  1. Emotion Word–Anti-Intellectualism

  2. Cognition Words–Anti-Individualism

  3. Faith is Not either/or, but both are engaged in faith

  4. What is Spiritual precedes emotions

  5. What is Spiritual impacts our thoughts

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ,” (2 Cor. 10:5)

C. VERSE 2:

  1. By being of the same mind

  2. Having the same love

  3. Being in full accord

  4. And of one mind (repeated now for third time)

D. Cognition, Knowledge, Agreement

***Confession of the Truth, “the faith of the gospel,” not Concession to tolerate disagreement, falsehood and error.

***Confession of the Lord’s Word, not mere human Consensus by majority vote

E. Very much part of that Fellowship which stands apart from lawlessness, darkness, unbelief, idolatry (false belief about who God is, what He says or does)

PART TWO: Unity Draws to Selfless Care and Keeping of One Another in Fellowship

A. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit (avoid sinful dangers in seeking agreement)

B. But in humility count others more significant than yourselves (spiritual virtue in seeking agreement)

C. Let each of you look not only to your own interests, (avoid the desire for personal benefit or gain at others’ expense)

D. But also to the interests of others. (Compassionate concern for others’ spiritual well being and growth)

PART THREE: Have This Mind—Christ like Humility & Obedience to the Point of Death

A. United in Fellowship to that Faithful and Obedient Jesus

****Does your Jesus believe “every Word that comes from the mouth of God”?

****Does your Jesus obey, conform lips and life to every word?

B. Sharing in the humility of the Lord Jesus by faith

Have this mind among yourselves,

which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who,

though he was in the form of God,

did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

C. Walking together in the Obedience of Jesus by faith

7 but emptied himself,

by taking the form of a servant,

being born in the likeness of men.

8 And being found in human form,

he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death,

even death on a cross.

PART FOUR: The Obedient Knees and Tongues Confess Jesus Christ is LORD

9 Therefore God has highly exalted him

and bestowed on him the name

that is above every name,

10 so that at the name of Jesus

every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.
